Friday nights used to mean putting on my takkies (sneakers) and finding the most epic dance floors to squeak on till sunrise…. Then I met the love of my life and we ordered Greek takeaway and watched movies for our first Friday date night and life never felt better 🙂 Now, I occasionally hang up the party shoes and keep the love alive by recreating that first Friday date night and making my own version of one of our favorite Greek dishes. Enter the Halloumi Love Bites ™ – the name says it all! The Love Bites also make a very filling shared starter at a friendly dinner party or a yummy movie snack option! xx
Ingredients
400g block of halloumi
1 egg
½ cup of flour
½ cup of sesame seeds
Lots of oil for deep frying
½ cup of honey
Essentials
Cast iron deep sauce pot, preferably small size to use less oil but still get the “deep” effect
OR a Deep Fryer – aka the DF 🙂
Stainless steel spatula to keep the Love Bites dancing
Kitchen paper towels to put the Halloumi on after frying
Serves 2-3 people
Directions
Fill your pot to 4 fingers up with oil, and place on the stove on high heat – OR heat up the oil in your DF
Cut the halloumi into roughly 3x3cm squares
In a plate, coat your halloumi squares in the flour
Move the squares into the bowl with the beaten egg and coat – use two forks if you want to keep fingers clean(ish)
Move your Halloumi squares into the bowl sesame seeds and coat.
When the oil is very hot, dunk 3 or 4 squares into the pot and try to keep them from touching and sticking together. Once they turn a golden brown (takes about 1 minute), remove and place onto your paper towel to lose excess oils. Repeat until all bites are on the towel. It’s important not to put too many in the pot at once as it will be impossible to keep them apart.
In a small bowl, heat the honey in the microwave for 30 seconds on high… this should make the consistency slightly runnier than usual.
Place the Halloumi bites on a wooden board with the bowl of honey in the middle and serve while fresh and warm!
Dipping the bites in the honey is the final coating of LOOOVE that we all need a little of in life 😉 Enjoy!
